## Asthma

Asthma represents the **leading cause of disability**.

Asthma affects people of all ages but:

- Is more common in women aged over 15 years of age
- Increases with decreasing socioeconomic status
- Increases with the outer regional and remote areas of Australia bracket compared with major cities

A person with asthma and their families carry 18% of the financial costs associated with the disease – *Access Economics November 2015*

- 32% of people with asthma skip their treatment sighting out of pocket costs being a major contributing factor – *GBI Research Asia-Pacific May 2018*
